I have watched so many of your videos and Iโm such a big fan! You explain everything so eloquently and itโs so interesting for me to hear about. I love your personality and humor! I recently found your Substack and I will absolutely be reading your articles.
Yes! I have so much to learn about finding true vintage. I'd also be interested in any tips you may have on using non vintage items (reproduction or otherwise) to still achieve a vintage look.
Whoa! What a great article! Iโve been shopping vintage for a very long time, and even I learned new things from this! Thanks so much, this is a great reference guide.
I have been lucky enough to score (I think) some vintage pieces at a thrift store: Gucci handbag 1990's. YSL Leather pencil skirt. I am going to cross ref the labels etc against this wonderful article.
This may not apply to clothes, but some vintage items will say made in Korea. Korea seems to be where cheap things were made, instead of China back then lol. I have an old sewing box my great grandma bought for my mom a long time ago, it and all the stuff in it, were made in Korea. Whats cool tho, is i have some metal sewing scissors that were my great grandmas, and they are made in the USA.
Woah, that's a fascinating observation about vintage items and their origins!
It's interesting to see how production locations have shifted over time. Itโs amazing how these items carry not just utility but also memories and stories from different eras. Thanks for sharing this piece of history, ladycolumbia :)
Youโre a saint for putting this all together in one place! Well written and thorough. Definitely adding this to my collection of saves to reference later!

Thank you so much, Lily. That really means a lot to me and Iโm grateful that youโre here!
I will definitely be using this info next time I go vintage shopping ๐๐ฉต
This is so great! Two easy ones I use to search are single stitch and made in hong kong for more 80s 90s stuff!
Thank you for the addition! I'm kicking myself for forgetting to mention single stitching and deeper hems...!
It was sooo thorough!
Great resource, thank you!
I had to look up more about why zipper placement moved around:

Thank you for sharing. Fascinating to learn how radical and frowned upon they were
Wow! This is *excellent*. I love all the sneaky โfancyโ names acrylic has had!
Right? If I ever see โZeranโ on a tag, I will be immediately excited
This post is such a wealth of information. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for reading!
Such a thorough guide, thank you Gabi <3
